    The Indonesian Language

    • Indonesian is natively known as Bahasa Indonesia and belongs to the Austronesian, Malayo-Polynesian, Malay language family.
    • There are approximately 43 million native, 200 million total worldwide.
    • Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) was chosen as the national language of Indonesia at independence in 1945, despite being the native language of only a small fraction of the population, to unite the archipelago's hundreds of ethnic groups.
    • Indonesian is based on Riau Malay and is closely related to Malaysian Malay; the two are largely mutually intelligible, though they have diverged in vocabulary and spelling conventions.
    • Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country with over 270 million people and more than 700 living languages, making Indonesian essential as a lingua franca.
    • The language adopted the Latin alphabet during Dutch colonial rule, replacing earlier use of Arabic script (Jawi) and various indigenous scripts.
    • Indonesian grammar is relatively simple, with no grammatical gender, no verb conjugation for tense, and no articles, making it one of the easier Asian languages for English speakers to learn.
    • Indonesia is Australia's closest large neighbour, and the relationship is of significant strategic and economic importance. The Indonesian-born community in Australia numbers around 85,000, concentrated in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth. Many Indonesians in Australia are students, with Indonesia being a major source of international students. Indonesian is one of the most commonly taught Asian languages in Australian schools.
