    The Serbian Language

    • Serbian is natively known as Српски / Srpski and belongs to the Indo-European, Slavic, South Slavic, Western language family.
    • There are approximately 12 million native speakers worldwide.
    • Serbian is unique among European languages in actively using two alphabets: Cyrillic (official) and Latin, with most Serbians being fully biliterate.
    • Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin were historically considered one language (Serbo-Croatian) and remain mutually intelligible despite political separation.
    • The Serbian Cyrillic alphabet was reformed by Vuk Stefanovi\xc4\x87 Karad\xc5\xbei\xc4\x87 in the 19th century on the principle of "write as you speak and read as it is written."
    • Serbia's patron saint celebration (Slava) is a unique tradition recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
    • Serbian has seven grammatical cases and a complex verb system with both aspects and tenses.
    • The Serbian community in Australia is one of the largest outside the Balkans, numbering over 95,000 people of Serbian ancestry. Major waves arrived after WWII and during the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s. Communities are concentrated in Melbourne (Footscray, Keilor), Sydney (Liverpool, Cabramatta), and Wollongong. Serbian Orthodox churches and community organisations are active across Australia.

    About Woolloomooloo

Woolloomooloo translation servicesWoolloomooloo is a harbourside, inner-city eastern suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Woolloomooloo is 1.5 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Sydney. It is in a low-lying, former docklands area at the head of Woolloomooloo Bay, on Sydney Harbour.

The Domain sits to the west, the locality of East Sydney is near the south-west corner of the suburb and the locality of Kings Cross is near the south-east corner. The suburb was a poorer working class district of Sydney. This has changed only recently with recent gentrification of the inner city areas of Sydney. The redevelopment of the waterfront, particularly the construction of the housing development on the Finger Wharf, has caused major change. Areas of public housing (Housing NSW aka "Housing Commission") still exist in the suburb.

The current spelling of Woolloomooloo is derived from the name of the first homestead in the area, Wolloomooloo House, built by the first landowner John Palmer. There is debate as to how Palmer came up with the name with different Aboriginal words being suggested. Anthropologist J.D. McCarthy wrote in 'NSW Aboriginal Places Names', in 1946, that Woolloomooloo could be derived from either Wallamullah, meaning place of plenty or Wallabahmullah, meaning a young black kangaroo.
