    The Finnish Language

    • Finnish is natively known as Suomi and belongs to the Uralic, Finnic language family.
    • There are approximately 5.8 million native speakers worldwide.
    • Finnish is one of the two official languages of Finland (alongside Swedish) and is one of the few non-Indo-European languages in the European Union.
    • Finnish has 15 grammatical cases, extensive agglutination (words built by adding suffixes), and vowel harmony, making it notably different from most European languages.
    • The longest Finnish word in everyday use is often cited as epäjärjestelmällistyttämättömyydellänsäkäänköhän, demonstrating the language's agglutinative nature.
    • Finnish is remarkably phonetic; words are pronounced exactly as they are written, with each letter having a single consistent sound.
    • The Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, compiled by Elias Lonnrot in 1835, was a major inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien in creating his Elvish languages.
    • Finnish migration to Australia has been modest, with small communities established since the gold rush era and post-World War II. The Finnish-born population numbers around 5,000, with communities in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Finnish clubs and saunas serve as social gathering points, and the community celebrates Finnish traditions such as Midsummer (Juhannus).

    About Alderley

Alderley is a suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is 7 kilometres (4 mi) north-west of the CBD. It is surrounded by Newmarket in the south, Ashgrove and Enoggera in the west, Grange and Stafford in the east and Kedron and Everton Park in the north. At the 2006 census, it had a populatio of 5,068. In prehistory, the area was inhabited by the Turrbal Aboriginal clan. Corroborees were held at Sedgeley Park estate.
