The Macedonian Language
- Macedonian is natively known as Македонски and belongs to the Indo-European, Slavic, South Slavic, Eastern South Slavic language family.
- There are approximately 2 million native speakers worldwide.
- Macedonian was codified as a standard language in 1945 following the establishment of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia within Yugoslavia.
- The language is closely related to Bulgarian, and the two share many features including the loss of noun cases and the use of a definite article suffix, unusual among Slavic languages.
- Macedonian uses a Cyrillic alphabet of 31 letters, including several unique characters such as \xd0\x83, \xd0\x85, \xd1\x98, \xd1\x99, and \xd1\x9a.
- The Saints Cyril and Methodius, creators of the Glagolitic alphabet from which Cyrillic derives, were from Thessaloniki and spoke a Slavic dialect closely related to Old Macedonian.
- The Macedonian language has been at the centre of political disputes, with some neighbouring countries historically questioning its status as a separate language.
- Australia has one of the largest Macedonian diaspora communities in the world, with an estimated 90,000-200,000 people of Macedonian ancestry. Communities are concentrated in Melbourne (Thomastown, Epping, Rockbank), Sydney (Rockdale, Bankstown), and Wollongong. Migration peaked in the 1960s-1970s under guest worker schemes. Macedonian Orthodox churches, community centres, and soccer clubs are important cultural institutions.
About Ardglen
Ardglen is a village on the Main North railway line and close to the New England Highway on the North West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia. A railway station was opened there on 13 August 1877 as Doughboy Hollow, which was later renamed Ardglen on 29 June 1893.
No trace of the railway station now exists. The significant 488 metre single-track rail tunnel, Ardglen Tunnel, passes through the Liverpool Range south of the former rail station site. It is one of the very few remaining single-track tunnels in use. Doughboy Hollow Post Office opened on 16 November 1877, was renamed Ardglen in 1893 and closed in 1983.
