    The Dutch Language

    • Dutch is natively known as Nederlands and belongs to the Indo-European, Germanic, West Germanic language family.
    • There are approximately 25 million native speakers worldwide.
    • Dutch is the official language of the Netherlands, Belgium (Flanders), Suriname, and several Caribbean islands including Aruba, Curacao, and Sint Maarten.
    • Dutch is the closest major language to English, sharing a common ancestor in West Germanic, and many English words have Dutch origins including "cookie," "boss," "yacht," and "landscape."
    • The language has two main standard varieties: Netherlands Dutch and Belgian Dutch (Flemish), with differences in pronunciation, vocabulary, and some grammar.
    • Dutch played a significant role in world trade and colonialism, leading to its influence on languages such as Indonesian, Malay, Japanese, and several creole languages.
    • The Dutch language has a system of diminutives (adding -je, -tje, -pje suffixes) that is used far more extensively than in English, even with abstract concepts.
    • Dutch migration to Australia was significant in the post-World War II era, with over 150,000 Dutch migrants arriving between 1945 and 1970 as part of assisted migration programs. The Netherlands-born population now numbers around 60,000, with many more of Dutch descent. Dutch Australians have integrated extensively but maintain cultural connections through clubs and the annual King's Day celebrations.

    About Ashfield

Ashfield is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Ashfield is about 9 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative centre for the local government area of the Municipality of Ashfield. The official name for the Ashfield Local Government Area was changed to Ashfield Council in November 2011.

Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area now known as Ashfield was home to the Wangal people. Their territory was believed to be centred on modern-day Concord and stretched east to the swampland of Long Cove Creek (now known as Hawthorne Canal). The land was heavily wooded at the time with tall eucalypts covering the higher ground and a variety of swampy trees along Iron Cove Creek. The arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 had a devastating effect on the local people, mainly from the introduction of smallpox, to which the indigenous people had little resistance.

Ashfield's population is highly multicultural. Its urban density is relatively high for Australia, with the majority of the area's dwellings being a mixture of mainly post-war low-rise flats (apartment blocks) and Federation-era detached houses. Amongst these are a number of grand Victorian buildings that offer a hint of Ashfield's rich cultural heritage.
