The Italian Language
- Italian is natively known as Italiano and belongs to the Indo-European, Romance, Italo-Dalmatian language family.
- There are approximately 67 million native speakers worldwide.
- Italian is based on the Tuscan dialect, largely thanks to the literary prestige of Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio, whose works established Tuscan as the literary standard centuries before Italian unification in 1861.
- Italy has extraordinary linguistic diversity, with dozens of regional languages and dialects (Sicilian, Neapolitan, Venetian, Sardinian, etc.) that are often not mutually intelligible with standard Italian.
- Italian is an official language of Italy, Switzerland (Ticino and Grisons cantons), San Marino, and Vatican City, and is a working language of the European Union.
- The Italian language has contributed extensively to English vocabulary, particularly in music (piano, forte, soprano), food (pizza, pasta, espresso), and architecture (cupola, balcony, portico).
- Italian has a remarkably phonetic spelling system, where words are generally pronounced exactly as written, with very few exceptions.
- Italian Australians are one of the largest and most established migrant communities, with over one million Australians claiming Italian ancestry. Mass migration occurred from the 1950s to 1970s under assisted migration schemes. Communities are prominent in Melbourne (Carlton, Brunswick, Northcote), Sydney (Leichhardt, Haberfield, Five Dock), and Adelaide. Italian clubs, churches, and festivals (e.g., Lygon Street Festa) remain important cultural institutions.
About Cherrybrook
Cherrybrook is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 27 kilometres north-west of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of Hornsby Shire. Cherrybrook is located in the Hills District of Sydney. Joseph Harrison, who had married Mary Ann Thompson, settled on a block in the area in 1839, planted orchards and built a small timber cottage they called "Cherrybrook Cottage". The name "Cherrybrook" is believed to have come from the fact they grew cherry trees near the creek, which passed through their land. Their 65-acre (260,000 m2) block, which became known as "Cherrybrook Farm", had been granted originally to Mary Russell during the 1820s. The orchards here produced peaches, apricots, pears, plums, and citrus fruit. Many years later the property was bought by Eric Vaux, who established a dairy and kept the name Cherrybrook. In 1959, the land was subdivided to become the first project home village in Sydney. The original bushland was bulldozed, and exhibition homes were built on cut and fill sites, then landscaped. Accelerated development occurred again in the remaining rural areas in the 1980s, and Cherrybrook Post Office opened on 20 July 1994.
