The Belarusian Language
- Belarusian is natively known as Беларуская мова and belongs to the Indo-European, Slavic, East Slavic language family.
- There are approximately 5.1 million native speakers worldwide.
- Belarusian is one of two official languages of Belarus (alongside Russian), though Russian dominates in everyday usage in most urban areas.
- The language uses a variant of the Cyrillic alphabet with unique letters not found in Russian, including the letters U short and the apostrophe used instead of the Russian hard sign.
- Belarusian has two competing orthographic systems: the official (post-1933 reform) and the classical (Tarashkevitsa), which can complicate translation work.
- The first printed book in a Slavic language was the Biblia Ruska by Francysk Skaryna, published in 1517 in the Old Belarusian language.
- Despite being an official state language, Belarusian has been classified as vulnerable by UNESCO due to decreasing daily usage in favour of Russian.
- The Belarusian community in Australia is relatively small, numbering a few thousand, with migration occurring in waves after World War II and more recently due to political upheaval following the 2020 protests. Communities exist in Sydney and Melbourne, often overlapping with broader Eastern European diaspora networks.
About Clovelly
Clovelly is a small beach-side suburb in Sydney's eastern suburbs, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Clovelly is located 8 kilometres south-east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Randwick, within the Federal Division of Wentworth. Clovelly is a mainly residential suburb on Clovelly Bay. Clovelly Beach is a small beach that sits on the end of the narrow bay. The bay is popular with swimmers. The bay is home to one of the first surf lifesaving clubs in the world, Clovelly Surf Life Saving Club, which was founded in 1906. Clovelly is surrounded by the suburbs of Bronte in the north, Randwick in the west and Coogee in the south. Originally known as Little Coogee, the name was changed to Clovelly in 1913. When the search for a new name began, the English seaside town Eastbourne, was suggested. The president of the local progress association, Mr F H Howe, suggested Clovelly, the name of a local estate owned by Sir John Robertson, which was named for the village of Clovelly on the north Devon coast, England.
