    The German Language

    • German is natively known as Deutsch and belongs to the Indo-European, Germanic, West Germanic language family.
    • There are approximately 95 million native, 130 million total speakers worldwide.
    • German is the most widely spoken native language in the European Union and an official language of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, and Belgium.
    • German is famous for its compound words, which can be of unlimited length; the longest word ever used in a law was Rindfleischetikettierungsueberwachungsaufgabenuebertragungsgesetz (beef labelling supervision delegation law).
    • There are significant differences between Standard German (Hochdeutsch), Austrian German, and Swiss German, each with distinct vocabulary, pronunciation, and conventions.
    • German was the dominant language of science and philosophy until the mid-20th century, and many scientific terms remain German (Kindergarten, Zeitgeist, Angst, Wanderlust).

    • German migration to Australia is one of the oldest and largest non-English-speaking migration streams, dating back to the 1830s. Over 100,000 German-born residents live in Australia, with many more of German descent. The Barossa Valley in South Australia retains strong German heritage. Post-WWII migration was significant, and German clubs (Concordia, Tivoli) operate across the country.

    About Drummoyne

Drummoyne is a suburb of Inner Western Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 6 kilometres north-west of the Sydney central business district. and is the administrative centre for the local government area of the City of Canada Bay Drummoyne sits on the peninsula between Iron Cove and Five Dock Bay. It is surrounded on three sides by Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River and, as such, has some of Sydney's best waterfront views. Drummoyne neighbours the similarly historic Five Dock and Abbotsford. William Wright, a merchant, whaler and sealer bought land in the northern part of the area in 1853. The property was bounded by present day Lyons Road and Victoria Road. Drummoyne House was built in the Georgian Classical style. It was rectangular in plan with a hipped roof with a concave verandah across the entire front and returned along each side. He named it Drummoyne Park after his family home at Drummoyne on Clyde in Scotland. In Gaelic, Drummoyne means flat topped ridge.
