    The Icelandic Language

    • Icelandic is natively known as Íslenska and belongs to the Indo-European, Germanic, North Germanic language family.
    • There are approximately 360,000 native speakers worldwide.
    • Icelandic has changed remarkably little since medieval times, allowing modern Icelanders to read the Old Norse sagas written 800 years ago with relative ease.
    • Iceland has a strong tradition of linguistic purism, coining new Icelandic words for modern concepts rather than borrowing from English (e.g., "t\xc3\xb6lva" for computer, from "t\xc3\xb6lu" meaning number and "v\xc3\xb6lva" meaning prophetess).
    • Icelandic retains the Old Norse letters thorn (\xc3\x9e/\xc3\xbe) and eth (\xc3\x90/\xc3\xb0), which were once used in English but disappeared after the Norman Conquest.
    • The Icelandic naming system is patronymic (or matronymic), where children take their father's (or mother's) first name plus "-son" or "-d\xc3\xb3ttir" rather than a hereditary surname.
    • Despite its small population, Iceland has one of the highest literacy rates and per capita book publishing rates in the world.
    • The Icelandic community in Australia is very small, numbering only a few hundred people. Most Icelandic speakers in Australia are temporary residents, students, or working holiday visa holders rather than permanent migrants. There is no significant Icelandic community infrastructure in Australia.

    About Emu Plains

Emu Plains is a suburb of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is 58 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Penrith and is part of the Greater Western Sydney region. Emu Plains is on the western side of the Nepean River, located at the foot of the Blue Mountains. Prior to European settlement, what is now Emu Plains was on the border of the Western Sydney-based Darug people and the Southern Highlands-based Gandangara people, whose land extended into the Blue Mountains. The local Darug people were known as the Mulgoa who lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle governed by traditional laws, which had their origins in the Dreamtime. They lived in huts made of bark called 'gunyahs', hunted kangaroos and emus for meat, and gathered yams, berries and other native plants.
