The Croatian Language
- Croatian is natively known as Hrvatski jezik and belongs to the Indo-European, Slavic, South Slavic language family.
- There are approximately 5.6 million native speakers worldwide.
- Croatian is the official language of Croatia and one of the official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the European Union.
- Croatian uses the Latin alphabet exclusively, unlike Serbian which can use both Cyrillic and Latin, providing a key orthographic distinction between the two closely related languages.
- The Croatian literary tradition dates back to the Baska Tablet from around 1100 CE, one of the oldest surviving texts in a South Slavic language.
- Croatian has been standardised based on the Stokavian dialect with ijekavian pronunciation, and maintains a purist tradition of coining native Slavic terms rather than borrowing from other languages.
- Croatia's Dalmatian coast has influenced the language with Italian loanwords, particularly in vocabulary related to maritime life, food, and architecture.
- Croatian Australians number over 130,000 (including second generation), making Australia home to one of the largest Croatian diaspora communities. Migration began in the late 19th century with settlers from Dalmatia working in mining and fishing, with larger waves after World War II and during the Yugoslav era. Communities are strong in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Geelong.
About Fig Tree Pocket
Fig Tree Pocket is a suburb of Brisbane, Australia 8 km south-west of the Brisbane CBD on the Brisbane River. Within a pocket of the Brisbane River, the suburb is relatively remote, devoted mostly to low density housing. This impression of remoteness is enhanced by the large proportion of trees and parks within the area, and by low levels of noise pollution, caused byvehicular traffic and construction work. At the 2011 Australian Census the suburb recorded a population of 3,652.
Fig Tree Pocket has some of the most expensive riverfront property in Brisbane and Australia, with one property selling for A$9.5 million and another sold for A$7.15 million in early 2009 . It is noteworthy also for the absence of stores of any kind, with the nearest major shopping complex being the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. Despite this removal from other standard suburban conveniences, the area is serviced by two Brisbane Transport bus routes - the 430 and the 445 - both of which have a terminus at Mandalay Park. The western boundary is marked by the Western Freeway.
