    The Maltese Language

    • Maltese is natively known as Malti and belongs to the Afroasiatic, Semitic, Central Semitic, Arabic language family.
    • There are approximately 520,000 native speakers worldwide.
    • Maltese is the only Semitic language written in the Latin alphabet and the only Semitic language that is an official language of the European Union.
    • The language descended from Siculo-Arabic (the Arabic dialect of medieval Sicily) and has been heavily influenced by Italian, Sicilian, French, and English over the centuries.
    • Maltese vocabulary is approximately 52% Romance (Italian/Sicilian) and 32% Arabic in origin, with the remainder from English and other sources.
    • The Maltese alphabet includes unique characters: \xc4\xa0/\xc4\xa1 (a silent letter affecting surrounding vowels), \xc4\xa6/\xc4\xa7 (a pharyngeal fricative), and \xc5\xbb/\xc5\xbc (similar to English "z").
    • Despite Malta's tiny size (316 km\xc2\xb2), Maltese has survived alongside English, Italian, and other colonial languages for centuries.
    • Maltese Australians number approximately 190,000 people of Maltese descent, making Australia home to one of the largest Maltese diaspora communities. Migration peaked in the postwar period (1948-1970s). Communities are concentrated in Melbourne (Sunshine, Albion, St Albans) and Sydney (Blacktown, Penrith, Liverpool). Maltese community clubs, Catholic parishes, and the Maltese language newspaper remain important, though English dominance is increasing among younger generations.

    About Ingleburn

Ingleburn is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 44 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of City of Campbelltown. It is part of the Macarthur region.

Ingleburn lies approximately half way between the two commercial centres of Liverpool and Campbelltown. The land in the Ingleburn area was originally inhabited by the Tharawal people prior to the arrival of settlers from the First Fleet in 1788. The first land grants in the area were made in 1809 to William Hall, William Neale, Joshua Alliot and Timothy Loughlin, all previously soldiers in the NSW Corps. As such, the area became known as "Soldier Flat". In 1869, a rail platform was built on the old Neale grant and given the name Macquarie Fields Station after a property to the north. However, in 1881 the Macquarie Fields estate subdivided to become the new village of Macquarie Fields. The fact that the station was a long way from the village caused confusion so a new name was sought for the station and Ingleburn was chosen in 1883. One theory has it was named after a local house formerly owned by Mary Ruse, daughter of pioneer James Ruse. Other records indicate it was named after a British town although the corresponding town hasn't been identified.Ingleburn is Scottish for "bend in the river" referring to the significant bend in the nearby Georges River.
