- Bulgarian is natively known as Български език and belongs to the Indo-European, Slavic, South Slavic language family.
- There are approximately 8 million native speakers worldwide.
- Bulgarian is the oldest documented Slavic language, with texts dating back to the 9th century when the Cyrillic alphabet was created by disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Bulgaria.
- Unlike most other Slavic languages, Bulgarian has lost its case system and uses a definite article that is suffixed to the noun, making its grammar quite different from Russian or Polish.
- The Cyrillic alphabet, now used by dozens of languages worldwide, was developed in the First Bulgarian Empire and became an official script of the European Union when Bulgaria joined in 2007.
- Bulgarian uses a unique renarrative mood (preizkazno naklonenie) that indicates reported or unwitnessed information, a feature shared with Turkish.
- Bulgaria has one of the oldest gold treasures in the world (Varna Gold, 4600 BCE), and the Bulgarian language has contributed words like "yoghurt" to many languages.
- Bulgarian migration to Australia began after World War II, with further waves in the 1990s following political and economic changes. The community numbers around 20,000, concentrated in Melbourne and Sydney, with active Bulgarian Orthodox churches, cultural associations, and language schools.
