    The Lithuanian Language

    • Lithuanian is natively known as Lietuvių kalba and belongs to the Indo-European, Balto-Slavic, Baltic, Eastern Baltic language family.
    • There are approximately 3 million native speakers worldwide.
    • Lithuanian is widely considered the most archaic living Indo-European language, preserving features of Proto-Indo-European that other languages lost thousands of years ago.
    • The language retains a complex system of noun declension with seven cases and two numbers, and verb conjugation with multiple tenses and moods.
    • Lithuanian has a rich tradition of folk songs (dainos) that have been inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
    • The first Lithuanian book, a catechism by Martynas Ma\xc5\xbevydas, was published in 1547, relatively late compared to other European languages.
    • Like Latvian, Lithuanian was a key symbol of national identity during the Soviet occupation, and the language movement was central to the independence struggle.
    • The Lithuanian community in Australia, numbering a few thousand, was established by post-World War II displaced persons fleeing Soviet occupation. Melbourne and Sydney have Lithuanian community centres, Catholic churches, and Saturday schools. The community maintained strong anti-Soviet activism during the Cold War. Post-independence migration has been minimal.

    About New Farm

New Farm translation serviceNew Farm is an inner suburb of Brisbane, Australia, two km east of the Brisbane CBD on a large bend of the Brisbane River. New Farm is partly surrounded by the Brisbane River, with land access from the north-west through Fortitude Valley and from the north through Newstead. At the 2011 Australian Census the suburb recorded a population of 11,330. It has the highest population density in Greater Brisbane with approximately 5,861.7 people per square kilometre. At the south-eastern end of the peninsula is the historic New Farm Park.

New Farm derives its name from the fact that the peninsula was used as a farming area in the early years of Brisbane's history. Brunswick Street is the main street running northwest-southeast up the centre of the peninsula. To the south of Brunswick Street the suburb is characterised by large ornate Queenslander-style houses, shady streets lined with large trees and tall apartment buildings, predominantly along the river. More modest Queenslander-style houses dominate the north of Brunswick Street, where there are fewer large trees and apartments.
