    The Estonian Language

    • Estonian is natively known as Eesti keel and belongs to the Uralic, Finnic language family.
    • There are approximately 1.1 million native speakers worldwide.
    • Estonian is a Finno-Ugric language closely related to Finnish, and is one of the few official EU languages that is not part of the Indo-European language family.
    • Estonian has 14 grammatical cases for nouns, making it one of the most complex case systems in European languages.
    • The language distinguishes three degrees of consonant and vowel length (short, long, and overlong), a feature rare among world languages.
    • Estonian has no grammatical gender and no future tense; future meaning is conveyed through context and adverbs.
    • Estonia has one of the highest literacy rates in the world (99.8%), and the Estonian language has been a cornerstone of national identity through centuries of foreign rule by Danes, Germans, Swedes, and Russians.
    • Estonian migration to Australia was predominantly post-World War II, when several thousand Estonians fled Soviet occupation. The community, numbering around 6,000, is concentrated in Sydney and Melbourne, with active Estonian Houses (Eesti Maja) serving as cultural and social centres. The community maintains strong ties to Estonia, which regained independence in 1991.

    About Stafford

Stafford is a northern suburb of Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland, Australia. A predominantly residential suburb, including some original Queenslander-style homes and a significant number of post-war Queensland Housing Commission homes on quarter-acre blocks built around the 1940s and 1950s, Stafford lies to the west of Lutwyche Road, along the banks of Kedron Brook. Being an area of that age, a large number of Stafford's residents are elderly people, as well as growing number of families of a younger generation. Stafford was originally called Happy Valley. It is possible that the name originates from the fact the Sir Thomas Brisbane for whom the city is named was an officer in the Staffordshire Regiment - a Stafford Knot is featured in the city's coat-of-arms.
