- Swedish is natively known as Svenska and belongs to the Indo-European, Germanic, North Germanic language family.
- There are approximately 10 million native speakers worldwide.
- Swedish is the most widely spoken of the Scandinavian languages and is an official language of both Sweden and Finland.
- Swedish has a pitch accent system with two tones that can distinguish word meaning, a feature rare among European languages.
- The Swedish Academy, founded in 1786, is responsible for awarding the Nobel Prize in Literature and publishes the authoritative Swedish dictionary.
- Swedish uses the letters \xc3\xa5, \xc3\xa4, and \xc3\xb6 as distinct letters placed at the end of the alphabet, not as variants of a, a, and o.
- Sweden has one of the highest rates of English proficiency among non-English-speaking countries, which influences modern Swedish with frequent English loanwords.
- The Swedish community in Australia is small, with a few thousand Swedish-born residents. Migration has been modest and largely skilled or lifestyle-driven. Swedish-Australians are found in major cities, with small community organisations in Sydney and Melbourne. Most Swedish migrants are highly proficient in English, reducing demand for translation services.
About Sydney Olympic Park
Sydney Olympic Park is a large sporting, cultural and leisure complex in western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is also an official suburb of Sydney. Sydney Olympic Park is located 16 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Auburn Council.
The area was redeveloped for the 2000 Olympics. The facilities built continue to be used for sporting and cultural events, including the Sydney Royal Easter Show, Sydney Festival, Big Day Out, Sydney 500 and a number of world-class sporting fixtures. The suburb also contains commercial development and extensive parklands. The area was originally part of the suburb of Homebush Bay, but was designated a suburb in its own right in 2009. The Wangal clan of Indigenous Australians lived in the area before British settlement.
The area was called "The Flats" by a scouting party shortly after the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. It became part of the Newington Estate in 1807, which was acquired by John Blaxland. The Government acquired some of the land for an aged women's home in the late 19th century. Much of the land was reclaimed from the river and wetlands by landfill.
