    The Cambodian Language

    • Cambodian is natively known as ភាសាខ្មែរ and belongs to the Austroasiatic, Mon-Khmer language family.
    • There are approximately 16 million native speakers worldwide.
    • Khmer (Cambodian) is the official language of Cambodia and has the largest alphabet in the world, with 74 characters in its script according to the Guinness Book of Records.
    • Unlike its neighbours Thai, Lao, and Vietnamese, Khmer is not a tonal language, making it unique among mainland Southeast Asian languages.
    • The Khmer script is descended from the Pallava script of southern India and has been in continuous use since the 7th century, with inscriptions found throughout the Angkor temple complex.
    • Khmer has a complex system of royal vocabulary (Reach) used exclusively when speaking about or to the King, reflecting the deep respect for the monarchy.
    • The language has heavily influenced Thai and Lao, which borrowed much of their literary and administrative vocabulary from Khmer during the Angkor period.
    • Cambodia-born Australians number over 35,000, with the majority arriving as refugees in the 1980s and 1990s following the Khmer Rouge genocide and its aftermath. Communities are concentrated in Fairfield and Cabramatta in Sydney, as well as in Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. Buddhist temples (Wats) serve as key community centres.
