The Maltese Language
- Maltese is natively known as Malti and belongs to the Afroasiatic, Semitic, Central Semitic, Arabic language family.
- There are approximately 520,000 native speakers worldwide.
- Maltese is the only Semitic language written in the Latin alphabet and the only Semitic language that is an official language of the European Union.
- The language descended from Siculo-Arabic (the Arabic dialect of medieval Sicily) and has been heavily influenced by Italian, Sicilian, French, and English over the centuries.
- Maltese vocabulary is approximately 52% Romance (Italian/Sicilian) and 32% Arabic in origin, with the remainder from English and other sources.
- The Maltese alphabet includes unique characters: \xc4\xa0/\xc4\xa1 (a silent letter affecting surrounding vowels), \xc4\xa6/\xc4\xa7 (a pharyngeal fricative), and \xc5\xbb/\xc5\xbc (similar to English "z").
- Despite Malta's tiny size (316 km\xc2\xb2), Maltese has survived alongside English, Italian, and other colonial languages for centuries.
- Maltese Australians number approximately 190,000 people of Maltese descent, making Australia home to one of the largest Maltese diaspora communities. Migration peaked in the postwar period (1948-1970s). Communities are concentrated in Melbourne (Sunshine, Albion, St Albans) and Sydney (Blacktown, Penrith, Liverpool). Maltese community clubs, Catholic parishes, and the Maltese language newspaper remain important, though English dominance is increasing among younger generations.
About Tempe
Tempe is a suburb in the inner west of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Tempe is located 9 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of Marrickville Council. Tempe sits on the northern bank of the Cooks River and is separated from Sydney Airport by the Alexandra Canal, also known as Sheas Creek.
The Wolli Creek waterway also empties into the Cooks River near Tempe. Tempe was named after the mansion on the southern banks of the Cooks River in the area that is now known as Wolli Creek. Alexander Brodie Spark (1792–1856), an immigrant from Elgin, Scotland, built Tempe House in 1836. It was named after the 'Vale of Tempe', a beautiful valley in ancient Greek legend set at the foot of Mount Olympus in Greece. Tempe House, designed by John Verge (1772–1861), has a Georgian feel and is regarded as one of the great houses of Sydney.
Spark also donated money towards the purchase of land and the building of St Peter’s Church of England, which gave its name to the suburb of St Peters, to the north of Tempe.
