    The Malay Language

    • There are approximately 77 million native, 200+ million total worldwide.
    • Malay is the national language of Malaysia (as Bahasa Malaysia), Brunei, and is one of four official languages of Singapore.
    • Malay and Indonesian are closely related varieties of the same language, though they have diverged in vocabulary, spelling, and some grammatical usage since standardisation in different countries.
    • Historically, Malay was written in Jawi script (a modified Arabic script), which is still used in Malaysia and Brunei alongside the Latin-based Rumi script.
    • Malay served as the lingua franca of maritime Southeast Asia for centuries, facilitating trade across the Malay Archipelago long before European colonisation.
    • The language has absorbed extensive loanwords from Sanskrit, Arabic, Tamil, Portuguese, Dutch, and English, reflecting the region's rich trading history.
    • The Malaysian community in Australia numbers around 175,000 Malaysian-born residents, making it one of the larger Southeast Asian communities. Malaysians are concentrated in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, and Adelaide. Many arrived as international students and subsequently gained permanent residency. The community is ethnically diverse, including Malay, Chinese Malaysian, and Indian Malaysian populations with distinct language needs.

    About Yalwal

Yalwal translation servicesYalwal is the site of a former gold mining town of the same name situated 29 km (18 mi) west of Nowra at the confluence of the Dangera and Yarramunmun Creeks which then forms Yalwal Creek which flows into the Shoalhaven River. It is now the site of a City of Shoalhaven managed picnic area and Dangera Dam. Prior to European settlement this was Wandandian Aboriginal land. Gold was first discovered in the area by Rev W.B. Clarke in 1852.

Successful sluicing operations began in 1870 by J. Sivewright and party but were disrupted by the great flood of 1871. In 1872 open cut mining operations were begun at the Pinnacle when the main reef was discovered. The first shafts were sunk in the Homeward Bound mine in 1872 with payable gold found in 1874. In 1875 the first stamp battery (5 head) was erected. In 1880 a mail receiving station was opened and in 1884 a public school opened, it closed in 1918, reopened in 1924 and finally closed in 1928.
