    The Pashto Language

    • Pashto is natively known as پښتو and belongs to the Indo-European, Iranian, Eastern Iranian language family.
    • There are approximately 40-60 million native speakers worldwide.
    • Pashto is one of the two official languages of Afghanistan alongside Dari, and is also widely spoken in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and Balochistan in Pakistan.
    • The Pashto alphabet is a modified Arabic script with additional letters to represent sounds unique to Pashto, totalling 44 letters.
    • Pashto has a literary tradition dating back to at least the 16th century, with the warrior-poet Khushal Khan Khattak considered the national poet of Afghanistan.
    • The language has two major dialect groups: the softer southern variety (Kandahari) and the harder northern variety (Peshawari).
    • The Pashtunwali code of honour, central to Pashtun culture, is deeply embedded in the language's proverbs and idiomatic expressions.
    • The Afghan community in Australia has grown significantly, numbering over 50,000 Afghan-born residents. Pashto speakers form a substantial portion alongside Dari speakers. Communities are concentrated in Sydney (Auburn, Merrylands), Melbourne (Dandenong), and Adelaide. Many arrived through humanitarian programs following decades of conflict in Afghanistan.

    About Fig Tree Pocket

Fig Tree Pocket is a suburb of Brisbane, Australia 8 km south-west of the Brisbane CBD on the Brisbane River. Within a pocket of the Brisbane River, the suburb is relatively remote, devoted mostly to low density housing. This impression of remoteness is enhanced by the large proportion of trees and parks within the area, and by low levels of noise pollution, caused byvehicular traffic and construction work. At the 2011 Australian Census the suburb recorded a population of 3,652.

Fig Tree Pocket has some of the most expensive riverfront property in Brisbane and Australia, with one property selling for A$9.5 million and another sold for A$7.15 million in early 2009 . It is noteworthy also for the absence of stores of any kind, with the nearest major shopping complex being the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. Despite this removal from other standard suburban conveniences, the area is serviced by two Brisbane Transport bus routes - the 430 and the 445 - both of which have a terminus at Mandalay Park. The western boundary is marked by the Western Freeway.
