    • Tamil is natively known as தமிழ் and belongs to the Dravidian, South Dravidian language family.
    • There are approximately 78 million native speakers worldwide.
    • Tamil is one of the oldest living languages in the world, with a literary tradition spanning over 2,000 years and Sangam literature dating to the 3rd century BCE.
    • It is the official language of Tamil Nadu in India and an official language of Sri Lanka and Singapore.
    • Tamil was the first Indian language to be declared a classical language by the Government of India in 2004.
    • The Tamil script is an abugida (alphasyllabary) with 12 vowels, 18 consonants, and one special character (the aytham), which combine to form 247 compound characters.
    • Tamil has maintained a purist tradition, with a movement to replace Sanskrit and English loanwords with pure Tamil equivalents, particularly in formal and official usage.
    • The Tamil-speaking community in Australia includes migrants from both India (Tamil Nadu) and Sri Lanka, numbering over 100,000 combined. Sri Lankan Tamils, many of whom arrived as refugees during and after the civil conflict, are concentrated in Sydney (Strathfield, Homebush) and Melbourne (Dandenong). Indian Tamils are part of the broader Indian skilled migration wave. Pongal, Deepavali, and Thai Pusam are widely celebrated.

    About Woolloomooloo

Woolloomooloo translation servicesWoolloomooloo is a harbourside, inner-city eastern suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Woolloomooloo is 1.5 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Sydney. It is in a low-lying, former docklands area at the head of Woolloomooloo Bay, on Sydney Harbour.

The Domain sits to the west, the locality of East Sydney is near the south-west corner of the suburb and the locality of Kings Cross is near the south-east corner. The suburb was a poorer working class district of Sydney. This has changed only recently with recent gentrification of the inner city areas of Sydney. The redevelopment of the waterfront, particularly the construction of the housing development on the Finger Wharf, has caused major change. Areas of public housing (Housing NSW aka "Housing Commission") still exist in the suburb.

The current spelling of Woolloomooloo is derived from the name of the first homestead in the area, Wolloomooloo House, built by the first landowner John Palmer. There is debate as to how Palmer came up with the name with different Aboriginal words being suggested. Anthropologist J.D. McCarthy wrote in 'NSW Aboriginal Places Names', in 1946, that Woolloomooloo could be derived from either Wallamullah, meaning place of plenty or Wallabahmullah, meaning a young black kangaroo.
